About this template
Death Estate Notification – Financial Documentation and Municipal Matter is an editable template package for bereaved individuals who want to gather information before contacting the municipal social welfare committee. It includes a preliminary contact letter, financial inventory documents, registers of bank details, documents, and contacts, as well as an Excel tool.
Important: Only the social welfare committee may prepare a statutory death estate notification for the Swedish Tax Agency. This package is not an official application or death estate notification and does not entitle the user to a municipal decision. The municipality's own e-services, forms, and instructions should be used when required. The price of SEK 79 applies only to the optional document templates.
01. Package Contents
15 customer files: 7 DOCX, 7 corresponding searchable PDFs, and 1 XLSX workbook with nine tabs. Five working documents, a Swedish guide, and an English guide are provided in both Word and PDF formats, along with Excel. The package is delivered as a ZIP file for digital download.
02. What the Files Contain
Request to the social welfare committee, asset and expenditure documentation, bank and transaction inventory, document checklist, communication log, guides, and registers to distinguish between submitted documentation, actually received documents, and the municipality's decisions. Excel only totals entered amounts and administrative statuses; it does not determine whether the conditions of the law are met.

How It Works
- Contact the municipality early. Ask for instructions regarding the death estate in question and how sensitive documents can be submitted securely.
- Identify the assets. Check bank funds and other assets on the date of death, and determine whether the deceased was married and whether a share of the surviving spouse's marital property should be considered.
- Check real estate and leasehold rights. If such property is part of the death estate, the death estate notification cannot replace an estate inventory.
- Collect verifications. The municipality may request bank statements, tax documents, a death certificate with a family history, documentation of costs, and valuations.
- Document decisions. Distinguish between your own contact, submitted material, the municipality's acknowledgment of receipt, and an actual municipal decision.
Legal Basis and Important Limitations
According to Chapter 20, Section 8 a of the Swedish Inheritance Code (1958:637), a death estate notification may in some cases replace an estate inventory when the assets are insufficient to cover funeral costs and other expenses related to the death, and no assets constitute real estate or leasehold rights. If there is a surviving spouse, any share the deceased may have had in the spouse's marital property must also be included. The municipal social welfare committee reviews the conditions and makes the notification to the Swedish Tax Agency itself.
According to the Swedish Tax Agency's legal guidance, the social welfare committee's death estate notification should be made within two months of the death, but it may be submitted later in some cases. This guideline is not an automatic application deadline in Excel. A separate application for financial assistance with funeral costs is a different municipal matter and is not included as an official form.
What Does the Excel Register Do?
The workbook has nine tabs: Dashboard, Cases, Assets, Death-Related Expenses, Accounts, Documents, Contacts, Review, and Read Me. The formulas calculate the number of registered cases, case status, total assets and death-related expenses, as well as the number of missing documents and open review questions. An administrative discrepancy is not a legal decision regarding the death estate notification. No automatic municipal decisions, legal calculation of deadlines, or approved deductions are calculated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is This an Official Death Estate Notification?
No. Only the municipal social welfare committee may prepare and submit the formal death estate notification to the Swedish Tax Agency. The templates are only preparatory aids.
Can I Use the Package if the Deceased Owned Property?
A death estate notification cannot replace an estate inventory if real estate or leasehold rights are included among the deceased's assets. Contact the municipality and the Swedish Tax Agency if an estate inventory must be made.
Do I Also Need to Apply for Financial Assistance?
No, that is a separate matter. If the funeral costs cannot be paid, the municipal case officer can explain how to submit a possible application for financial assistance.
Are the PDF Files Fillable?
The PDF files are searchable and printable. Editing is done in the Word versions.
Is the English Guide a Legal Form in English?
No. The English User Guide is an explanatory user guide. The Swedish documents are based on Swedish law.
