Simple Promissory Note in English in Word and PDF for those who want to document a private loan under Swedish law. The agreement text is titled Simple Promissory Note and is complemented by a separate Swedish completion guide. You fill in the parties, loan amount, repayment date, and any interest in a clear two-page template.
Promissory note in English for private loans in Sweden
The template is intended for a loan already disbursed in Swedish kronor between an adult lender and an adult borrower who are both resident in Sweden and acting privately. It is suitable, for example, when friends or adult family members want to write down the terms in English. The entire principal amount must still be unpaid, and the loan is to be repaid on a specific future date.
The language is English, but the template refers to Swedish law. It is therefore not a loan agreement designed for British or American law. The Swedish guide helps you understand the fields and terms before the document is signed.
This is included in the download
- English promissory note template in Word, DOCX: two pages that can be edited.

The delivery consists of a ZIP file containing four documents. The PDF files do not have interactive form fields. No physical product is sent.

Common questions about English promissory notes
Can I use the template for an interest-free loan?
Yes. Enter 0 in the field for annual interest. According to the template, even an empty interest field means 0 percent. A loan without standard interest can still incur default interest if the payment is delayed.
When does the standard interest start accruing?
It starts on the day of the later signature. The template does not regulate interest for the period before that day. If you need to regulate previous interest or already made repayments, the document needs to be adapted.
What applies in case of late payment?
The default provision is based on the higher of the agreed annual interest rate or the Riksbank's reference rate in force at the time plus eight percentage points. Standard interest and default interest are not added on top of each other for the same principal and time period. The guide explains the difference.
Is this the same as a negotiable promissory note?
No. A simple promissory note is issued to a specific lender. The template is not designed as a promissory note to the bearer or to order.
Can the template be used for business loans or different cash contributions?
It is not designed for business loans or credit lending by a trader. In the case of different cash contributions to a joint home, ownership shares and potentially a cohabitation agreement also need to be assessed. This template does not solve these issues on its own.
Scope and legal basis
The template applies to a simple private loan with one lender, one borrower, and one final repayment date. It is not adapted for multiple borrowers, repayment plans, minors, pledges, guarantees, international connections, or loans brokered by a trader. In such circumstances, a customized setup is needed.
The basis has been checked against the Promissory Notes Act (1936:81), the Interest Act (1975:635), the Statute of Limitations Act (1981:130), and the Contracts Act (1915:218). Legal sources and limitations are found in the guide. It is a general document template that needs to be filled in and assessed based on the parties' situation, not individual legal advice.
English template under Swedish law
This Simple Promissory Note template documents an unsecured private loan already advanced in SEK between two adults resident in Sweden. It provides for a fixed repayment date, optional ordinary interest, early repayment and late-payment interest. The agreement is in English; the separate completion guide is in Swedish. Editable Word files and printable PDFs are included. The template is not intended for business lending, cross-border loans, instalment schedules or secured lending.
