03. Excel – rights register with nine tabs
Work register · Parties · Rights · Transfers · Compensation · Limitations · Checks · Overview · Read me.
The overview calculates 16 administrative key figures for registered works, rights statuses, signing, third-party material, compensation items, and open checks. The register tabs have empty fill-in fields and selectable status options. No fabricated personal or transaction data has been entered.
Limitation: Excel does not determine whether a copyright exists, is owned by a contractual party, or can be transferred. Economic totals must not be compared between different currencies without manual currency separation. Store personal and contract data securely.
How to use a copyright transfer agreement
- Identify actual authors and verify the chain of rights.
- Distinguish protected works, related rights, and third-party licenses.
- Determine whether economic rights should be transferred or if a license is actually required.
- List every work, version, and exception in the appendix.
- Specify usage, territory, time, adaptation, and further transfer.
- Consider the author's moral rights under Section 3.
- Review compensation, information obligations, and mandatory provisions where applicable.
- Check employee and freelancer rights, particularly computer programs under Section 40 a.
- Sign the final agreement with approved appendices and documented authority.
- Acknowledge actual delivery and follow up on open rights issues.
What does the Copyright Act say?
Transfer of economic copyright (Section 27)
According to the Copyright Act (1960:729), economic rights may be transferred in whole or in part. Purchase of an image file, book, or other copy does not automatically imply a transfer of rights.
Modifying the work or further transferring the rights (Section 28)
Unless otherwise agreed, the acquirer may, as a general rule, not modify the work or transfer the rights further. These matters should therefore be described explicitly for each usage.
Fair compensation, information, and rescission (Sections 29–29 e)
When the legal requirements are met, the author may be entitled to fair compensation and specific information, even after the signing of the agreement. The provisions contain limitations and exceptions, including for computer programs. Not all rights can be waived by contract.
Copyright in employment and commissions
A paid freelance assignment does not automatically mean that all copyright has transferred to the client. Rules regarding works within employment may depend on job duties, contract content, and specific legal rules. For computer programs created by employees, Section 40 a applies.
Moral rights and third-party material
According to the Swedish Intellectual Property Office (PRV) guidance, moral rights protect, among other things, the author's name and the integrity of the work. Contractual parties also need to verify rights to, for example, images, music, fonts, and third-party code libraries.
Related agreements and documents
If only usage rights are to be granted, see License Agreement. For commercial assignments, a Consultancy Agreement may be relevant. For content produced by creators, a UGC Creator Agreement may be needed. See also more business agreements and document templates.
Frequently asked questions
Can all copyright be transferred?
Economic rights can be transferred in whole or in part by law. The author's moral rights have special protection and cannot be handled as a freely transferable general property right.
What is the difference between transfer and license?
A transfer concerns economic rights under the agreement. A license/grant instead gives permission to use the work within agreed limits; choose the correct type of agreement according to the purpose.
Does the agreement apply to logos and photographs?
It can be used as a starting point for identified creative works, but protection status, author, any registered trademark rights, and third-party parts must be assessed.
Is an English contract text included?
No, the five operative main documents are in Swedish. The English User Guide helps English-speaking users understand the Swedish documents.
Can Excel issue or sign transfers automatically?
No. Excel is an administrative register and does not sign agreements, determine contract validity, or verify ownership.
Are the agreements approved by lawyers or authorities?
No. The package is editorially reviewed against stated public sources, but not externally certified by law firms or authorities.
