About this template
Application for an extension of time for probate – professional document package for estate heirs and representatives who need to request more time from the Swedish Tax Agency to hold the probate proceedings. Word templates, searchable PDFs and Excel for cases, decisions and follow-up. The package is an administrative aid and does not mean that an extension will be granted.
Important before purchase: The application to the Swedish Tax Agency is free of charge and can be made orally or in writing. The price here applies to Mallbutikens ready-made documents and work aids – not the authority's processing. The package applies to the original probate, not to an extension of the time to submit an already drawn up probate.
When is the package suitable?
When the nature of the estate or another special reason means that the probate proceedings cannot be held within the ordinary time. For example, more documentation on assets and debts or time to sort out contacts between those involved may be needed. The Swedish Tax Agency assesses the special reasons in the individual case.
01. Package contents
15 customer files: seven Word files (.docx), seven corresponding searchable PDF files and an Excel workbook (.xlsx) with nine tabs. There are five working documents and two user guides in two formats as well as an Excel register. The English guide is not an English version of the application.
02. What the files contain
Application template, concrete reason and action plan, contact and authority documentation, deadline and communication log, application for a further extension, Swedish user guide, English User Guide and an administrative Excel register for applications, contacts, authority decisions, attachments and checkpoints.

The actual function of the Excel tool
The workbook counts the number of registered cases, applications marked as received, decisions marked as granted or rejected, actions and checkpoints. All dates for deadlines, authority decisions and receipt must be entered and verified manually. An application registered as “Received” does not mean “Granted”. Excel does not calculate legal deadlines and does not make legal decisions.
How to use the package
- Check the date of death and when an application must have been received at the latest.
- Describe why the proceedings cannot be held within the ordinary time and which later date you request.
- Check the applicant's authority and send the application via one of the Swedish Tax Agency's current contact channels.
- Save proof of the contact as well as the Swedish Tax Agency's actual decision. Enter any decision in the log.
- If additional time is needed: send a new application before the previously granted extension period expires.
Legal requirements under Swedish law
According to Chapter 20, Section 1 of the Inheritance Code, probate must normally be held no later than three months after death. The Swedish Tax Agency can, upon application received within that time, extend the time for proceedings when special circumstances justify it. The Swedish Tax Agency's guidance states that the application is free of charge, can be made orally or in writing and that a granted extension must always state a specific final date for proceedings.
Distinguish between proceedings and submission: according to Chapter 20, Section 8 of the Inheritance Code, the drawn up probate must be submitted within one month. The Swedish Tax Agency explains that an extension for the submission itself cannot be granted. Estate notification, supplementary probate and international special cases require special assessment.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to apply to the Swedish Tax Agency?
Nothing. The application for an extension is free of charge. The template package costs 79 SEK and is completely optional to purchase.
Do I have to use a special form?
No. The Swedish Tax Agency accepts oral and written applications. The templates are aids for written presentation and documentation.
Is an extension automatic if the application is submitted on time?
No. The Swedish Tax Agency assesses whether there are sufficient reasons and decides on any extension.
Can I apply for more extension if I have already received an extension?
Yes, a new application can be made, but it must be received before the expiration of the previously granted extension period. A new application does not automatically result in an extension.

It explains the Swedish documents in English. The applications are still in Swedish and for Swedish law.
Can I edit the PDF files directly?
The PDF files are searchable and printable. Edit the information in Word; interactive PDF forms are not included.
