Are you going to lend a trailer privately to a friend, family member or neighbor? With this document package you can document who is borrowing the trailer, how long the loan lasts, existing damage, which accessories are handed over, weight and driver's license checks, and how the return went. The product is intended for free temporary lending between private individuals. For commercial rental, leasing or sale, other contract terms are required. The documents do not change traffic rules or insurance terms and do not constitute any approval from the Swedish Transport Agency.

How the document package works
01 – Loan agreement: enter the loan period, owner, registration number, use, actual agreements and signatures. The loan is free of charge, but any specific out-of-pocket expenses can be handled separately. There are no automatic late fees or standard damage amounts.
02 – Handover: document the visible condition before use. State photo ID of existing damage, lighting, tires, locks and accessories. If faults are found that may affect road safety, the journey must be stopped for the necessary inspection.
03 – Driver's license and vehicle combination: check driver's license eligibility B, extended B (B96) or BE, as well as actual data on the towing vehicle, trailer total weight, gross weight, the car's maximum trailer weight and train weight. Document the check in the Swedish Transport Agency's service and, if necessary, registration documents. **A completed checklist is not official approval.**
04 – Damage or incident: document the incident, visible damage, photos, external damage report and follow-up measures. Recording damage does not mean that payment liability has been established.
05 – Return: compare the condition and accessories with the handover protocol. Document any objections and actual cost documentation separately.
Excel register with nine tabs
The delivered workbook contains the tabs START, Parties, Trailers, Loans, Handover check, Eligibility and weights, Damage, Costs and Read me. Loans are registered with loan ID, date and manual status, and a formula calculates calendar days when valid dates are present. Trailers and parties are registered separately. The Eligibility and weights tab summarizes registered total weights, but has manual control fields for the towing vehicle's technical limitations, driver's license B/B96/BE and load securing. Entered values do not replace the Swedish Transport Agency's vehicle data or trailer calculator.
Under Costs, administrative expenses are calculated by quantity × kronor per unit, and START summarizes registered loans, open damage cases and amounts. The loan is free of charge; each expense must be actual, verified and specifically agreed. An Excel entry, a risk check or a cost total does not establish driving eligibility, insurance coverage or debt.
Insurance – a common misunderstanding
A trailer usually does not need its own traffic insurance because the towing vehicle's traffic insurance covers the attached trailer. Damage to the trailer itself, theft or fire may, however, require the trailer's separate half or full insurance and the correct terms. Always check any loan limitations, deductible and damage terms with the current insurance company – a signed loan agreement does not automatically provide insurance coverage.
Legal and road safety limitations
The Swedish Transport Agency states that you must meet both the driver's license regulations' weight limits and the towing vehicle's technical limitations. Data on the car's maximum trailer weight (e.g. O.1 and O.2) and maximum train weight (F.3) are separate control points. Gross weight is the actual current weight including load, while total weight is a design and registration specification. The Swedish Transport Agency's trailer calculator is a tool and may have limitations.
The template does not contain safety instructions for dangerous goods, professional load securing, vehicle recovery or maintenance. The borrower must follow current traffic, load securing and insurance rules and, in case of uncertainty about eligibility, weight or the trailer's condition, the journey must not be carried out until the matter is investigated.
In case of commercial rental, dispute, extensive damage or other special legal circumstances, relevant advice should be sought. The products are general templates and have not been reviewed by an external lawyer or vehicle inspector.
Frequently asked questions about trailer loans
Can I lend my trailer for free with this template?
Yes, the documents are specifically designed for free, temporary private lending. The agreement describes parties, loan period, handover condition and return.
Is it enough that the borrower has a B driver's license?
Not always. Check the trailer's total weight, the car's permitted towing and train weight, actual load and current driver's license eligibility. For some combinations, B96 or BE is required.
Does the car's insurance also cover the trailer?
The towing vehicle's traffic insurance covers the traffic liability of an attached trailer, but protection for damage to the trailer itself may require a separate trailer insurance.
Can I charge an automatic damage fee upon return?
No. The templates document the damage, photos and verifiable expenses. The liability issue requires a separate assessment; the Excel amount does not automatically constitute an approved compensation claim.
Are the PDF versions fillable and is the agreement available in English?
The Word files are editable, the PDF versions are searchable and printable. Some interactive PDF forms are not promised. The agreement is in Swedish; an English user guide is included.
