Dog Purchase Agreement 2026/2027 – Word/PDF with complete user guide
This is a comprehensive and professional dog purchase agreement adapted for Swedish conditions for 2026/2027. The template package can be used both for private sales and when a breeder or other professional trader sells to a consumer. The document is structured so that the parties clearly indicate which sales situation applies and receive guidance on which legal framework is relevant.
The template package has been legally reviewed against current law as of October 4, 2026. It takes into account, among other things, the Sale of Goods Act, the Consumer Sales Act, rules for the sale of live animals, distance selling, animal welfare regulations, ID marking, and registration in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's dog register.
Delivery: 2 documents in both Word (DOCX) and PDF – a total of 4 files and 16 A4 pages. The main agreement is 12 pages, including three appendices, and the user guide is 4 pages.
Includes
- Dog Purchase Agreement 2026/2027 – 12 pages with the agreement, forms, and three appendices.
- Detailed user guide – 4 pages explaining step-by-step how to use the agreement.
- Appendix A – Handover protocol for the day of delivery.
- Appendix B – Health, history, and behavior.
- Appendix C – Ownership transfer checklist for the Swedish Board of Agriculture's dog register.
For both private sales and sales from breeders
The applicable law depends on who is selling the dog. In a true private sale, what the parties have agreed upon applies first, followed by the Sale of Goods Act. However, if the seller conducts business involving dog sales and the buyer is a consumer, the Consumer Sales Act applies.
This can be particularly important in dog purchases because a person may be considered a trader even if the business is small and the person still describes themselves as a private individual in everyday language. Therefore, the template contains a special section where the seller's status is documented.
Clearly documented dog identity
The agreement includes structured fields for, among other things:
- registered name and call name,
- breed or mixed breed,
- sex and date of birth,
- color and markings,
- microchip or tattoo,
- chip/tattoo number,
- registration number or studbook,
- passport number,
- country of origin if imported.
Health and veterinary information
A central part of a secure dog purchase is documenting the dog's actual medical situation. The template therefore has separate fields for:
- latest veterinary examination,
- veterinarian or clinic,
- vaccinations,
- deworming and parasite treatment,
- current medications,
- allergies or hypersensitivity,
- known diagnoses,
- previous injuries and surgeries,
- hereditary or suspected hereditary problems,
- ongoing veterinary investigations.
Appendix B provides extra space for dogs with a longer medical history.
Behavior documented – not just health
The dog's behavior can be decisive for the purchase. Therefore, the contract includes fields for, among other things:
- temperament and sociality,
- reaction to children,
- reaction to other dogs and animals,
- separation anxiety,
- resource guarding,
- fear and noise sensitivity,
- propensity to run away,
- previous bites, attacks, or other serious incidents,
- training level and daily routines.
Known deviations clearly written down
The template does not attempt to replace clear information with a general statement that the dog is sold "as is." Instead, there is a separate register where the seller can document concrete known conditions, what supporting information exists, and that the buyer has been informed.
This provides a significantly better evidentiary position for both parties if questions later arise about what was known at the time of purchase.
Examination before purchase
The agreement documents whether the buyer has:
- met and examined the dog,
- had the opportunity for a veterinary examination,
- received veterinary certificates and other documents,
- bought the dog without meeting it first.
Documents to be handed over
There is a specific checklist for items such as:
- veterinary examination certificate,
- vaccination certificate,
- registration certificate or pedigree,
- EU pet passport,
- insurance information,
- medical records and other documentation,
- information on feed, medication, and routines.
If a document has particular significance for the purchase, it should be explicitly stated in the agreement.
Purchase price, deposit, and delivery
The template includes fields for:
- total purchase price,
- deposit already paid,
- remaining amount,
- payment date and method,
- delivery date, location, and time,
- transport and specific transport conditions,
- time for transfer of ownership and risk.
If the parties use Mallbutiken's separate deposit agreement for dogs, the terms should be coordinated so that the documents do not contradict each other.
Special rules for consumer purchase of live animals
The Consumer Sales Act contains a special rule for live animals. Defects that manifest within six months from delivery are subject to a special presumption rule. For a live animal whose price exceeds one-tenth of the price base amount, the trader and consumer may, under certain conditions, agree on exceptions to this specific rule.
The template therefore contains a separate and clearly marked optional clause. It should only be used in consumer purchases when the legal requirements are actually met. It does not eliminate the seller's other statutory responsibilities.
The price threshold is 5,920 SEK in 2026 and 5,960 SEK in 2027.
Distance purchases and off-premises sales
If a consumer buys a dog entirely at a distance from a trader without first meeting the seller, rules regarding the right of withdrawal may apply. The same may apply to agreements concluded outside the seller's business premises. The template therefore contains a special control section for how the agreement was concluded.
In sales by traders, the seller must ensure that all statutory information, such as the right of withdrawal, is provided correctly.
The Dog Register and ownership transfer
All dogs in Sweden must be marked and registered. When the dog changes owners, it is the new owner who registers themselves as the new owner in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's dog register.
The template therefore contains a specific check for:
- verifying the dog's ID number,
- ensuring the previous owner's personal or organization number is available,
- assigning responsibility for registering the ownership transfer to the buyer,
- the date the ownership transfer should be completed.
New chip requirements from April 22, 2026
The Swedish Board of Agriculture states that dogs must be marked and registered. From April 22, 2026, the dog must also be marked with an approved chip to obtain a pet passport and travel abroad. The template package therefore provides a specific reminder to check the chip and current travel requirements.
Insurance
The agreement includes fields for the current insurance company, insurance number, veterinary care insurance, life insurance, and any reservations or exclusions. The buyer is reminded to check their own insurance coverage from the correct time.
Handover protocol on the day of delivery
Appendix A is used at the time of delivery. There, the parties can document:
- delivery date, time, and location,
- that the chip/tattoo has been read,
- the dog's general condition,
- last meal and medication,
- which documents and accessories have actually been handed over,
- separate signatures for handover and receipt.
Ownership transfer checklist
Appendix C helps the buyer complete the transition after the purchase. The checklist includes, among other things:
- check of chip/tattoo number,
- information needed from the previous owner,
- registration in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's dog register,
- insurance from the day of delivery,
- any passports and other registers.
Detailed user guide included
The separate user guide covers:
- how to determine if it is a private sale or a consumer sale,
- how the dog's identity should be documented,
- how health and behavior should be described,
- what specifically applies to private sales,
- what applies when a breeder/trader sells to a consumer,
- how the six-month rule for live animals works,
- what applies to distance purchases,
- which documents should be listed,
- how the ownership transfer in the dog register is carried out,
- what should be checked on the day of delivery.
