About this template

Child maintenance agreement – template in Word, PDF and Excel 2026/2027

Do you want to draw up a child maintenance agreement following a separation? This document package helps parents document an actually agreed-upon payment for the child's support and compile cost documentation, agreed amounts, and payment tracking. You receive two separate agreement templates: one for children under 18 and one for students who have turned 18, along with five supplementary Word documents and an Excel register with nine tabs.

Digital template package: 7 editable Word documents, 7 corresponding searchable PDF files in A4 format, and 1 Excel workbook (XLSX), a total of 15 files in a ZIP. Five Swedish main templates plus a Swedish user guide and an English User Guide. No physical delivery.

Child maintenance (underhållsbidrag) is not the same as maintenance support (underhållsstöd).

Child maintenance is a support payment between the parties involved. Maintenance support is a separate government benefit decided by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). The level of child maintenance depends on, among other things, the child's needs and both parents' financial capacity. Excel does not automatically calculate a legally correct child maintenance amount. Use the Social Insurance Agency's free calculation tool as support for your calculation, combined with an individual assessment. The tool cannot be used for all living situations.

Excel tool with nine tabs – budget, payments, and control

Overview: calculates registered agreements, cost documentation, registered payments, and control cases. Children & agreements: internal references, age group, and current agreement status. Child's costs: cost types, monthly amounts, and evidence references. Parents' finances: simple arithmetic surplus based on entered income and expenses; this is not a legal maintenance calculation. Agreed amounts: amount versions and changes. Payments: actual payments and bank documentation. Visitation days: a conditional illustrative deduction of 1/40 per full day, subject to manual confirmation of legal prerequisites. Controls: follow-up of open deviations. Read me: instructions and official sources.

The Excel file is delivered without pre-filled amounts, persons, or payments. An illustrative visitation deduction is not an automatic right to a deduction: the length of stay, time limits, potential net agreements, and other conditions must be verified.

How to use the maintenance agreement

  1. Determine the child's residence, age, and whether there is already a court order, an agreement, or state maintenance support.
  2. Compile the child's needs and both parents' financial circumstances using actual documentation.
  3. Review the authority's calculation tool or seek individual advisory support for a reasonable amount.
  4. Choose the correct agreement: document 01 for children under 18 or document 02 for adult students provided conditions are met.
  5. Fill in the monthly amount, first month of payment, due date, the correct payee, and any special follow-up.
  6. Check formal requirements, sign, and use the witness fields where enforcement might become relevant.
  7. Follow up on actual payments in Excel and document any changes in a new agreement.

Legal terms to be aware of

The Children and Parents Code, Chapter 7, governs child maintenance. Parents' maintenance obligation normally ceases when the child turns 18 but may continue during qualifying basic education, until the age of 21 at the latest. After age 18, child maintenance should normally be paid directly to the adult child, not to the other parent. As a general rule, child maintenance is paid in advance for the calendar month.

Agreements and two witnesses: The Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) can enforce maintenance according to a court order or a maintenance agreement witnessed by two people, provided the conditions are met. Special formal requirements apply to future one-off payments or longer payment periods; for children under 18, approval from the social services committee may also be required. The standard template is intended for ongoing monthly maintenance.

Visitation deduction: Chapter 7, Section 4 of the Children and Parents Code specifies conditions, including at least five consecutive full days or six full days during a calendar month, and special offsetting rules. This is not a function for automatically granted deductions. Indexing and changed circumstances must be assessed using current information.

Other templates for families and parents

For other needs regarding children, you can also view power of attorney for child matters and temporary care, power of attorney to the other parent, and parental consent for travel. These are separate products and do not replace a child maintenance agreement.

Frequently asked questions about child maintenance

What is the difference between child maintenance (underhållsbidrag) and maintenance support (underhållsstöd)?

Child maintenance concerns the child's support through a parent's payment. Maintenance support is a separate government benefit decided by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.

How do you calculate the correct child maintenance amount?

The starting point is the child's needs and both parents' financial capacity. The Social Insurance Agency's free tool is a support when the situation fits its usage conditions. The Excel tool provided here does not generate an automatic legal monthly amount.

Can an 18-year-old sign the agreement themselves?

Yes, an adult child can be a party to the agreement when there is a continued right to maintenance during qualifying studies, until the age of 21 at the latest. Payment is then normally made to the child.

Are witnesses required on the agreement?

Two witnesses are generally relevant for enforcement of a maintenance agreement by the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Check the formal requirements for your situation.

Are English legal documents included?

No. Five main templates and a Swedish guide are provided in Swedish. An English User Guide is included as user support.
