How to use the radon template – step by step
- Identify the need: map out buildings and whether the measurement concerns a single-family house, housing cooperative/multi-dwelling building, workplace, or public premises.
- Order correct measurement: follow the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's method description and order appropriate dosimeters from an accredited laboratory.
- Create measurement plan: register objects, dosimeter IDs, rooms, and planned measurement period in Excel.
- Document deployment: use the Word protocol and note operating conditions, deviations, and collection dates.
- Register laboratory report: enter the reported value and measurement method verbatim; do not calculate your own annual averages.
- Follow up: if necessary, document investigation, radon expert contact, measures taken, and new measurement.
- Archive: save original report and decisions with appropriate access and consider potential changes to the building and ventilation.
When and how should radon be measured in Sweden?
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) normally recommends radon measurement for at least two months between October 1 and April 30, as radon levels can vary depending on weather, ventilation, and occupancy. For a reliable result, the number of measuring points and the selection of apartments/rooms must follow the applicable method description. In single-family houses, at least two measuring points and measurement on the residential floor are generally required. In multi-dwelling buildings, specific selection rules apply.
200 Bq/m³ is the national reference level for radon concentration in existing homes and premises accessible to the public. This is not a general simple classification of every individual short-term measurement and must not be used as an automatic certificate of safety.
Workplaces are subject to specific exposure requirements and, in some cases, notification obligations according to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's regulations and work environment rules. Therefore, document the workplace's relevant occupancy times and any follow-up measurement methods specifically when required by an expert.
For residential buildings, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority normally recommends a new measurement after ten years or when structural changes may have affected the radon level. There is no general statutory ten-year limit for all homes. The municipality's environmental and health protection committee has supervisory responsibility and can order measurements or measures in individual cases.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a short-term measurement as a verified annual average.
- Not following the laboratory's instructions for dosimeter placement and measurement period.
- Drawing conclusions for an entire building based on one measuring point or one room.
- Confusing residential reference levels with workplace exposure limits.
- Marking internal measures as completed without documented follow-up.
- Not saving the laboratory report with the correct test ID and date.
Frequently asked questions about radon measurement and radon registries
Are dosimeters or a radon measurement included?
No. This is a digital document package for administration. The actual measurement is ordered separately from an appropriate laboratory.
Can Excel show if the radon level is approved?
No. The workbook provides an internal flag for review at certain reported values, but does not make any legal, technical, or medical final assessment.
How long does a radon measurement need to last?
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority normally recommends at least two months during the heating season (October 1–April 30) for long-term measurements. Follow the correct method for the respective type of premises.
Does the template work for housing cooperatives (BRF)?
Yes, it is particularly useful for managing multiple apartments and dosimeters, but the correct selection of apartments is determined according to the authority's method description.
Can I use the template after 2027?
Yes. The Excel registry uses dynamic dates, but official sources and internal routines need to be reviewed when rules change.
Is an English version included?
Word forms and the guide contain English reference text. Excel is in Swedish, and Swedish law and measurement methods are the foundation.
Does Excel calculate how high the radon value is for the entire property?
No. Official and method-compliant values must be obtained from the laboratory report and assessed by a competent person.
