About this template
SPC & Process Capability 2026/2027 – I–MR Control Charts and Cp/Cpk in Excel
Do you want to monitor manufacturing variation and document whether a process appears stable? This SPC template package combines five practical Swedish documents, two guides, and an Excel workbook for I–MR control charts, control limits, Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk, measurement follow-up, and deviation management. For workshops, CNC production, quality departments, and small manufacturing businesses.
7 Word + 7 searchable A4-PDF + 1 Excel with 9 tabs and 2 built-in control charts. The spreadsheet is empty upon delivery, featuring formulas, status fields, and practical control gates. No fictitious production data is included.
The package is based on publicly described methodology for I–MR control charts and process capability. ISO 7870-2:2023 serves as guidance for Shewhart control charts, but the full standard text is not included. The product is not ISO-certified, and no automatic results constitute quality approval. The designation 2027 refers to the document version, not a claim of established future regulations.

Excel Tool – nine tabs and two control charts
The tool includes the worksheets Overview, Parameters, Measurement Data, Control Limits, Capability, Deviations, Actions, Decisions, and Read me. Enter up to 200 time-ordered observations and receive automatic moving-range values, indications for out-of-specification measurements, and signals against control limits after documented baseline review.
- I–MR Chart: Line chart for individual observations and moving ranges with control limits calculated from the first 25 measurement values. Control limits require separate technical judgment before use.
- Process Capability: Calculates Cp/Cpk with sigma within (MR-mean/1.128) and Pp/Ppk with total sample standard deviation for two-sided specifications. The spreadsheet waits for at least 50 observations and marking of a manually reviewed baseline.
- Deviation and Actions: Custom registers for signals, suspected cause, responsibility, actual implementation, and effect verification. A registered case does not mean something has been approved.
- Overview: Twelve key performance indicators, including number of measurement values, control signals, deviations, open actions, and manually approved decisions.
How to use the package – step by step
- Define the property, process step, measurement method, unit, and current customer specification limits LSL/USL in the SPC Plan.
- Document the sampling frequency, instrument status, and measurement order in the Measurement Instruction.
- Enter Parameters in Excel and record the observations chronologically in Measurement Data.
- Review the preliminary baseline of 25 observations with a responsible expert. Register the actual decision before the limits are used.
- Investigate control signals and out-of-specification measurements separately. Document actions and actual effect control.
- Interpret Cp/Cpk only after reviewing process stability, representative sampling, distribution, and measurement uncertainty. Use the separate Process Capability Report.
Method, limitations, and terms of use
A control limit is not the same as a specification limit. Control limits estimate a process's variation; LSL and USL come from drawings or customer requirements. A measurement between the control limits is therefore not automatically approved according to the drawing. The spreadsheet uses only individual measurements with moving range over two observations; it does not replace Xbar–R charts, distribution-fitted analysis, MSA/Gage R&R, or customer-specific validation.
Process capability requires technical judgment. The statistical indices are preliminary working values, not decisions on product release. Such an assessment may also require distribution checks and more data than 50 observations. The SPC package is a voluntary administrative and quality-technical support tool, not a prescribed government form or a complete copy of an ISO standard.
Supplementary documents and relevant internal links
To ensure the traceability of measurement values, you can use the Calibration Register & Gauge Control. For a broader quality assurance process, there is a Quality Plan & Control Program. If you need to plan maintenance actions that arise from process deviations, Machine Register & Preventive Maintenance can supplement the work. Also, see the category Quality Management & ISO.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Cp and Cpk?
Cp describes the relationship between tolerance width and calculated short-term variation. Cpk also considers where the mean is located in relation to the tolerance limits.
Is the Excel tool a complete SPC system?
No. It is a practical calculation and documentation support tool for I–MR and two-sided process capability, not a certified SPC system or an automated product release tool.
Can I use the template with more than 25 measurement values?
Yes. The workbook holds up to 200 measurement values. The first 25 are used as a fixed preliminary Phase I baseline; technical stability assessment is always needed.
What happens when no values have been registered?
The overview's counters show zero and capability values are left blank. Temporary test data is not included in the delivery.
Are the main templates also in English?
No. The five main templates are in Swedish. The English User Guide explains their use in English.
