About this template

Horse Fodervärd (Care Lease) Agreement – Complete Template with Care, Insurance, and Excel

A horse care lease agreement (fodervärdsavtal) helps owners and caregivers document how the horse will be kept, used, cared for, and returned. This package contains an editable agreement in Word, appendices for stable routines, veterinary care, cost distribution, insurance, and handover, as well as an Excel tool for administration and follow-up.

The package is particularly useful when the horse stays with another horse keeper for a period. A care lease agreement is not the same as a co-rider agreement – a care lease arrangement may involve more extensive responsibility for the horse's daily care, stabling, and ongoing expenses. The agreement must therefore be adapted to the actual circumstances.

Digital delivery: A ZIP with 15 files: 7 Word (DOCX), 7 corresponding searchable A4 PDFs, and 1 Excel (XLSX) with nine tabs. Five Swedish main templates, a Swedish user guide, and a separate English User Guide. No physical delivery or subscription.

Important note on horse passports and animal welfare: A horse passport is not a certificate of ownership. The horse and the location where it is kept may be subject to mandatory registration, even when the horse is only temporarily placed with a caregiver. Horses intended to stay at a facility for at least 30 days must normally be registered there. The Animal Welfare Act's requirements for supervision, feeding, and necessary veterinary care cannot be contracted away. It is also not possible to guarantee insurance compensation through wording in the template.

03. The Excel tool – nine tabs and 16 key metrics

Overview · Horses · Care · Stable & Registration · Costs · Payments · Veterinary Care · Incidents · Read Me.

The overview compiles, among other things, registered horses, care sessions, reported minutes, relocation and registration logs, actual costs, allocated cost shares, amounts actually paid, remaining agreed payments, veterinary care, and incidents. Status fields and drop-down lists make it easier to keep the registry consistent. Formulas: cost difference = actual paid minus allocated shares; remaining payment = agreed amount minus actual payment, with a lower limit of zero.

Important: Excel does not provide official approval of facility or animal registration, does not determine who is legally the horse keeper, and cannot certify that veterinary care or animal welfare has been performed. All registers are empty from the start; no test horses or fake transactions are included.

How to use a horse care lease agreement

  1. Verify owner and identity. Identify the horse through its passport, UELN, and microchip, but check ownership separately. Passports are not proof of ownership.
  2. Determine the agreement type. A care-leased horse differs from limited co-riding, purchase, boarding, and other arrangements.
  3. Describe the agreement period. Specify the start, any trial period, termination, and where the horse will be kept.
  4. Check the facility. Find out who handles facility registration and if the horse needs to be registered at the new location.
  5. Document care. Specify feed schedule, water, stable environment, turnout, supervision, hoof care, and special limitations.
  6. Determine usage. Write down the rights to ride, train, compete, transport, or use the horse for breeding, as well as explicit limitations.
  7. Check insurance. Coordinate the correct policyholder, coverage, any exclusions, and deductibles with the insurance company.
  8. Distribute costs. Use the cost appendix for items such as feed, stabling, farrier, routine veterinary care, and transport.
  9. Document handover. Save the horse's status, equipment list, passport details, dates, and mutual receipt.
  10. Follow up and terminate. Record actual activities and events in Excel. Follow agreed routines for termination, veterinary contact, and return.

Legal issues and safety regarding care-leased horses

Ownership, horse passports, and facility registration

A caregiver does not automatically become the owner simply because the horse is stabled with them. According to the Swedish Board of Agriculture's rules on horse passports and registration, the passport is not a certificate of ownership. A location where horses are kept must normally be registered as a facility, and horses intended to stay there for 30 days or more must normally be registered there. It is important that the parties and the facility manager verify who is to carry out the reporting.

Daily care, feed, supervision, and veterinary care

The Animal Welfare Act (2018:1192), including Chapter 2 Sections 1–4 and Chapter 4 Section 1, sets requirements for animal welfare, sufficient supervision, feed and water, as well as prompt necessary care in case of illness or injury. Anyone who keeps or takes care of the animal needs sufficient competence. The Swedish Board of Agriculture's care and stable guidance contains further practical rules. A private agreement may not be used to bypass such requirements.

Insurance, veterinary costs, and damages

Insurance coverage depends on actual insurance documents, the insurance company's terms, and what caused the injury. Therefore, do not fill in "insured" without first checking the scope, deductibles, limitations, and any exclusions for a horse at a different boarding location. The parties can regulate their internal cost distribution but cannot decide through the agreement that an insurer must pay compensation. Necessary care must not be delayed due to financial disagreements.

Termination, trial period, and return

Describe how the agreement ends and what should happen with the horse, passport, medical records, equipment, and any advance payments. A general template cannot resolve every dispute or circumstance upon return. For special situations, such as commercial operations, breeding, high economic values, or ownership disputes, legal advice may be needed.

Common questions about care lease agreements

What is a horse care lease agreement?

A care lease agreement is a private agreement on how someone other than the owner may keep or use the horse for a period and provide care. The agreement can regulate costs, responsibilities, riding, stabling, and return.

Does the caregiver become the owner of the horse?

No, not merely through a normal care lease agreement. Ownership and any future transfer need to be assessed and documented separately. The horse passport is not a certificate of ownership.

Who should pay for the veterinarian and farrier?

There is no single general cost structure that applies to all agreements. The parties need to specify whether the owner or the caregiver pays for each cost and how acute care is handled. The Animal Welfare Act's requirement for necessary care applies regardless.

Must the horse be registered when it moves to the caregiver?

The Swedish Board of Agriculture normally requires registration at a facility when the horse is planned to stay there for 30 days or more. The location must also be registered. Check for any special exemptions and who is responsible for reporting.

Can you use a co-rider agreement instead?

That depends on the actual agreement. A co-rider agreement with a few riding occasions is not always suitable when the caregiver is responsible for the horse full-time and it moves to another stable.

Is Excel included for costs and care?

Yes. The package contains an XLSX with nine tabs and formulas for cost distribution, payments, and compilation of care, veterinary matters, and events.

Is the agreement in English?

The main agreement and the Swedish appendices are in Swedish. An English User Guide explains how the material should be used, but is not a complete English version of the agreement.

Is this an approved insurance or government agreement?

No. It is an editable document package based on editorial review, not a certificate issued by an authority, veterinarian, insurer, or external legal counsel.
