About this template

Measurement System Analysis MSA & Gage R&R 2026/2027 – Excel, Word and PDF

Can your measurement results be used to control production, assess tolerances, and follow up on quality deviations? Before a measurement report or an SPC control chart is interpreted, the repeatability and reproducibility of the measurement process itself must be examined. This ready-to-use template package provides structure for MSA (Measurement System Analysis) and Gage R&R in a manufacturing environment, featuring an executable spreadsheet for a clearly defined study type and professional protocols.

15 files in one package: 7 editable Word (.docx) files, 7 searchable A4-PDFs, and an Excel workbook (.xlsx) with nine tabs. Five main Swedish documents, a Swedish guide, and an English User Guide. For quality managers, CNC workshops, measurement technicians, and manufacturing companies. Price 79 SEK – one-time purchase.

Method review October 14, 2026. The tool uses a crossed 10×3×2 study with the Average & Range method – not ANOVA. The protected AIAG MSA manual and official forms are not included. The product is not an accredited measurement uncertainty tool, proof of ISO/AIAG compliance, or an automated decision on the suitability of the measurement system. The year 2027 indicates the version.

Excel tool with nine tabs and 60 measurements

The workbook is prepared for ten reusable parts (P01–P10), three operators (A, B, and C), and two repeated measurements per operator and part. This provides a total of 60 real observations. The result cells for GRR and variation components remain empty until all 60 numerical values have been entered. No fictitious production data is included.

  • Overview: clear status indicators, number of registered observations, %GRR, ndc, open deviations, and manual decisions.
  • Study plan: article, instrument, characteristic, unit, optional two-sided tolerance, and actual review.
  • Measurement data: 30 operator/part combinations, two trials, automatic range and mean, and indicator for missing value.
  • Calculation: EV (repeatability), AV (reproducibility), GRR (combined measurement variation), PV (part-to-part variation), TV (total variation), %GRR of TV, and ndc. Optional percentage of two-sided tolerance is shown only with valid input. A chart shows the part means.
  • Traceability, Deviations, Actions, and Decisions: register with responsibility, references, documented effectiveness check, and manually entered decisions.
  • Read me: instructions, fixed statistical constants, method limitations, and open sources.

How to conduct a Gage R&R study

  1. Define: define what is being measured, instrument function, area of use, acceptance criteria, and correct article/drawing revision.
  2. Select test parts: choose ten real parts that together reflect relevant process variation. The study assumes each part can be measured again without changing.
  3. Plan the measurements: select three competent operators, randomize the order separately for two trials, and blind previous results if possible.
  4. Collect original data: enter real observations into the measurement protocol and then into Excel. Keep part, operator, and trial numbers, as well as instrument and method references.
  5. Review calculations: check that 60 actual measurement values exist and compare the calculated repeatability/reproducibility against applicable customer and business requirements.
  6. Make a separate decision: document limitations, improvement actions, any restudy, and the actual signature of the responsible decision-maker.

Statistical method and important limitations

The used Average & Range method utilizes two repetitions, three operators, and ten parts with fixed constants: K1 = 0.8862, K2 = 0.5231, K3 = 0.3146. For example, EV = mean range × K1 is calculated, while AV is estimated after correction for the repeatability contribution. The estimates refer to 1 standard deviation (1σ) and should not be confused with six-sigma distribution intervals. % tolerance uses 6×GRR divided by the valid two-sided tolerance width.

Method conditions: this is not an ANOVA analysis and the specific interaction between operator and part is not calculated separately. The method does not replace measurement uncertainty budget, assessment of systematic deviation (bias), linearity, time stability, instrument resolution, or the customer's own acceptance criteria. %GRR can change significantly if the test parts represent a narrower or wider process range. The suitability of the results must be assessed by an expert.

MSA is not a general Swedish government form. Protected manuals or standards should not be assumed to be included. The templates are independently designed as work aids based on publicly described metrological methodology, including NIST – Gauge R&R studies and NIST – Quantifying uncertainties. The product's word choices are not a claim of independent certification.

Related templates, guides, and categories

A documented measurement system analysis provides better support for SPC & Process Capability with I–MR control charts and Cp/Cpk, where it is important that measurement variation is not confused with process variation. In First Article Inspection & FAI, measurements are documented against drawings and established requirements. Also, check the gauge history in Calibration Register & Gauge Control. For a broader risk assessment, FMEA – Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is a supplementary support. Frequently asked questions

How many measurements are required for this template?

Exactly 60 actual measurement values: ten parts times three operators times two repetitions. Other test designs or destructive testing require a different analysis method or a customized workbook.

What is the difference between EV and AV?

EV describes variation when the same operator repeats measurements under study conditions; AV estimates the variation contribution between operators. GRR summarizes these two components, not all conceivable measurement uncertainty.

Is this an AIAG-certified MSA tool?

No. The package is based on generally described Gage R&R methodology but is not supplied with a licensed AIAG MSA manual, does not claim AIAG certification, and does not replace customer-specific instructions.

Can Excel automatically approve a measurement system?

No. The indices are preliminary aids. Approval requires competent evaluation, applicable acceptance criteria, and a separate, actually documented decision.

Can I use the package for a CNC workshop?

Yes, as a practical aid for non-destructive measurement studies with reusable parts, three operators, and two trials. Verify measurement method, fixtures, drawing requirements, and instrument status.

Are the templates available in English?

The main templates are in Swedish. An English User Guide explains their use, but it is not a complete translation of all templates.
