About this template
First Article Inspection & FAI 2026/2027 – measurement logs, drawing requirements, and Excel registry
Do you need to verify a first manufactured article against drawings and customer requirements before continuing production? This package for First Article Inspection (FAI) helps manufacturers, CNC workshops, subcontractors, and quality departments to plan inspections, document actual measurement results, link materials and manufacturing processes to the correct article revision, and make a separate, traceable release decision.
A total of 15 files: 7 Word, 7 searchable A4 PDFs, and one Excel tool with nine tabs. Five Swedish main templates, one Swedish user guide, and an English User Guide. Editable documents, no subscription or physical shipping.
The templates are an independent, voluntary documentation aid. SAE AS9102C is a separate, protected industry standard for FAI in aerospace; original forms and the full standard text are not included. The package is not claimed to satisfy AS9102C, ISO certification requirements, or any specific customer contract without supplementary review. 2027 is a version designation.

The Excel tool – nine useful tabs
The workbook contains Overview, Articles, Requirements Registry, Measurement Results, Process, Non-conformances, Actions, Decisions, and Read me. Registry-based key figures show the number of first article inspections, drawing requirements, recorded measurements, preliminary limit deviations, open non-conformances, and manually recorded decisions.
- Drawing and requirement connection: unique requirement IDs and inspection IDs with clear reference to the current drawing revision.
- Preliminary measurement comparison: formulas for actual values against specified lower and/or upper limits. Empty limits are not interpreted as zero. Deviating units and missing requirement IDs are signaled.
- Traceable process: batch, material certificates, machine, CNC program version, tools, and evidence references are recorded.
- Actions and decisions: separation between reported performance, impact analysis, and an actual manual release decision. No algorithm performs automatic approval.
How to conduct a First Article Inspection
- Create an inspection ID and enter the article, drawing number, revision, work order, sample, and the reason for the inspection.
- Inventory the customer's actual drawing requirements and any special inspection requirements. Register each requirement with a unique reference and correct units.
- Check measuring method, current status of measuring equipment, material certificates, and actual machine/program configuration.
- Register actual measurement values with measurement ID, sample number, requirement ID, method, and evidence in Excel and the measurement log.
- Investigate numerical deviations, missing documentation, uncertain measurements, and any customer waivers individually.
- Have an authorized person perform a final, documented assessment with signature, date, scope of the decision, and any conditions.
Legal and quality engineering requirements
First Article Inspection is not a general Swedish government form. If a contract stipulates requirements for, e.g., SAE AS9102C (2023), PPAP, or customer-specific FAI formats, the original requirements and applicable documentation order must be used. SAE describes AS9102C as supplementary to customer requirements and applicable regulations; the protected standard text must not be replaced by a general proprietary template.
SIS's public guidance on ISO 9001:2015 highlights the importance of documentation for measurement resources, identification, change review, release, and non-conformances. The product is not ISO-certified, and an Excel calculation does not constitute an independent conformity assessment or delivery approval.
Important limitation: Excel does not automatically convert units of measurement and does not automatically review measurement uncertainty, drawing interpretation, sampling, special processes, or customer acceptance criteria. The customer must ensure the correct requirements, competence, and actual decision-making authority.
Related products and further information
When measurement series need to be monitored over time, SPC & Process Capability with Control Charts in Excel can complement the first article inspection. For the traceability of measuring equipment, there is Calibration Registry & Gauge Control. With Quality Plan & Inspection Program, the inspection can be integrated into a larger quality system. For root cause investigation, the 8D Report & Root Cause Analysis is relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is FAI?
First Article Inspection is a documented verification of a first or representative article against specified requirements, often for a new article, drawing change, or process change. The scope is determined by customer requirements and the chosen method.
Is this an official AS9102C form?
No. The package was developed independently. It contains neither SAE's official forms nor licensed standard text and cannot be marketed as verified AS9102C-compliant.
Does Excel provide automatic approval?
No. Numerical comparisons only provide preliminary indicators. Decisions, measurement uncertainty, customer requirements, and any waivers must be assessed and documented by an authorized person.
Can I use it for CNC manufacturing?
Yes, as a general registration aid for article revisions, measurement results, machine/program traceability, non-conformances, and release documentation. Customer-specific requirements must be supplemented.
Are all documents in English?
No. The five main templates are in Swedish. The English User Guide describes how to use them together with the Excel tool.
